The contamination of the world’s water resources is today a major issue for human health, destined to become of even more impact in the near future. The control of adverse effects to humans resulting from the assumption of arsenic, fluorine and vanadium present in drinking water has been achieved through the introduction of legal limits. In Italy this was accomplished in 2003 with the adoption of  Legislative Decree no. 31/2001, which incorporated the Directive 98/83/EU, leading to the subsequent introduction of new more restrictive limits for the contents of arsenic from 50 µg/l to 10 µg/l, fluoride from 3 mg/l to 1,5 mg/l, Boron from 3 mg/l to 1mg/l.

The filtering media manufactured by the Gruppo Zilio guarantee compliance with the pollutants limits set by law. The operating costs have been greatly reduced because it is no longer necessary to replace the filtering material at the end of a cycle, but it is sufficient to regenerate the saturated material and to dispose of the solid waste of the exhausted filtrate.

The filtration solutions proposed by Gruppo Zilio S.p.A. include a wide range of sound technologies, tested and certified for the removal of arsenic, boron, caesium, chromium, fluorine, nickel, nitrate, sulphates, uranium and vanadium according to the principle of absorption or iron exchange.

Through project Regenera, which was supported by the European Union in the frame of the CIP Eco-innovation program and which has been selected by the European Union as one of the five success stories during the Eco Innovation day, Gruppo Zilio developed new processes for the removal of arsenic from drinking waters.

The plants built have capacities ranging from 1 l / s to 800 l / s with various types of intervention depending on the characteristics of the water to be treated and the existing treatment process.




Gruppo Zilio is involved in the ongoing research of the best technologies to help its clientele in the obtaining of wastewater management systems that can be sustainable in terms of environmental and economic impact through the adoption of process cycles that allow the reusing of the treated water.
Over the years, it has built many treatment plants in various locations with very high flow capacity.
It also operates through new technological solutions by providing wastewater treatment plants with a focus on both the municipalized and industrial plants through:
• Tertiary Filtration through Ultra Filtration with Silicon Carbide membranes;
• Bio Reactor Membranes (MBR) in immersed processes or "side stream", once again, with membranes in Silicon Carbide.

Processes with silicon carbide’ membranes:
The new filtration frontier is supported by the incredible versatility of the raw material, Silicon Carbide SiC that obtains: 
• High flows of permeate up to ten times higher than the corresponding traditional membranes; 
• Significantly reduced costs of plant engineering and plant operation; 
• Total chemical resistance (utilized pH between 0-14); 
• High thermal resistance (up to 800 ° C); 
• High resistance to abrasion (SiC is a very hard material); 
• Membranes regeneration with extreme washing protocols.

Zilio Ecologia is one of the main leading suppliers of drying, gasification and ozonolysis plants, using the most modern manufacturing processes and highly qualified engineering services.

Zilio S.p.a. engineering design takes into account the most varied drying systems, the use of heat sources of heat and of recovery of the used air. The sludge drying process with air recirculation, developed and implemented in our design and development office, offers a particularly economic and technologically simple evaporation system.

Because the sludge is not subjected to mechanical actions during the drying process, the emission of dust is extraordinarily low. Consequently, this system does not require additional equipment such as, for example, vapours condensers or suppression systems for dust, odour or other pollutants.

Zilio drying plant has been developed for drying heterogeneous sludge and sludge of different origin with a focus on energy savings and the elimination of dust with dry mass content by 65% - 95%.

Beside the drying process Gruppo Zilio Spa utilizes in some cases the thermo chemical process of gasification, which is considered one of the BAT (Best Available Techniques) currently available. It has the same advantages of incineration avoiding its typical problems such as emissions of sulphur and nitrogen oxides, heavy metals, fly ashes and the potential production of dioxins. The product obtained is a synthesis gas, syngas, suitable to energy valorization for electrical and thermal energy production.




For the process water and wastewater sectors Gruppo Zilio S.p.A. offers new plant engineering solutions configured with ceramic membranes in Silicon Carbide.

Application fields are several:

- oil water separation in waters resulting from oil production, oily suspensions in the first rainwater in hydrocarbons storage facilities and the exhaust of oil emulsions by the steel industry; 
- purification of landfill leachate, water filtration in water treatment systems with chemical, physics pre-flocculation, first rain water, tertiary water filtration in biological purification plants; 
-  MBR processes, both "side stream" and by immersion.

SiC therefore allows to work with liquids with extreme pH (0-14) and at high temperature without being affected by any chemical agent, thus allowing membranes washing procedures at extreme conditions, both in terms of chemicals used (strong acids, oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide or hypochlorite, solvents, etc. ..) and of temperature, allowing in any condition the restoration of the work cycles under any condition. 
The SiC membranes combined with the elimination of undesired metals, allow the removal of Fe (Iron), Mn (Manganese), As (Arsenic) and other impurities of various nature.




The Gruppo Zilio S.p.A. offers turnkey solutions for Greenfield but also for retrofitting activities in hydroelectric power plants, constantly providing the after-sales service for the management of the plants.

We have many years of experience in the design and construction of hydroelectric power plants for about 40 MW, methodically performing activities such as:

  • Evaluation of the site,
  • Analysis of flows capacity and historical statistical data,
  • Definition of the project and program implementation,
  • Complete assessment of the site in retrofitting projects,
  • Executive planning,
  • Handling of the entire authorization process,
  • Plant building with particular attention to the study of turbine efficiency as a function of periodic flows (Francis, Pelton)
  • Quality controls performed on materials and installations.

The plant design is executed in collaboration with skilled engineers with over 40 years of experience, utilizing a new system for the design of the core of the production group core.
